Sarah Bland was the youngest child of John Richard Bland and Annie Maria Bland, nee Horne. She was born in August 1883 in Mangawhare, Northland, New Zealand. She had three brothers, two sisters and four half-brothers from her father's first marriage. Sarah was probably named after Sarah Rebecca (or Rebekah) Curtis nee Horne who immigrated to New Zealand as a new bride, with her parents.
Sometime in early 1884, Annie returned to Auckland and resided at Wellington Street. It was at this address that Sarah became ill and died on 17 July 1884, just shy of her first birthday. She had suffered from lung congestion and apnoea. She was buried in Auckland, witnessed by Reverend Shenahan, a Church of England minister. Her exact burial place is unknown.
